A delegation from the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has held talks with Justice Stephen Rothman ahead of his review of the federal Sex Discrimination Act (SDA). Justice Rothman will act as Australian Law Reform Commissioner as the Albanese government moves towards delivering a federal Religious Discrimination Act. ACL National Director of Politics, Wendy Francis, said it was a welcome opportunity to outline the concerns of Christians. She joined ACL legal counsel Christopher Brohier and Queensland Director Rob Norman in the meeting with Justice Rothman. The delegation underlined that the ability to operate under a Biblical worldview was fundamental to the effective running of Christian schools.
The ACL leaders stressed that the removal of current exemptions with no balancing clauses added, would lead to the end of effective faith-based schooling. Ms. Francis said that: “Currently, exemptions exist in the SDA which allow a Christian school to navigate the cultural clash of philosophies that exists between teaching a biological (Christian) understanding of male and female, and the popular worldview which teaches that sex is not binary and that children can choose what sex they want to be.” Justice Rothman told the ACL delegation he understood the complex nature of the task assigned to him.
