FORMER BAPTIST LEADER ARRESTED IN MYANMAR

The former president of the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) has been arrested in Myanmar, a Christian persecution charity believes. Rev Dr Hkalam Samson was reportedly arrested at Mandalay International Airport on 5th December. The prominent religious leader was attempting to travel to Bangkok, in Thailand. He’s been dubbed one of Myanmar’s “most prominent and outspoken Christian religious leaders”. When a military coup overthrew the government, Rev Samson bravely launched an appeal for prayer – a move that is likely to have angered the forces currently running the country. Despite the threats, Rev Samson has not backed away from his work as a staunch defender of human rights.

In 2019, he met with the president of the United States at the White House. In 2018, he met with British parliamentarians to draw attention to the plight of people in Myanmar. Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s (CSW) senior analyst for East Asia Benedict Rogers said: “CSW is deeply troubled by the arrest of such a prominent and internationally respected religious leader in Myanmar, and are very concerned for his well-being. “We call on the Myanmar authorities to release him immediately, and we urge the international community to demand his unconditional release and ensure his well-being.”
