Anthony Albanese Caves in to Pressure Over Census Question on Gender Diversity, Sexuality

Anthony Albanese has backflipped on the removal of a 2026 census question gauging the gender diversity and sexuality of Australians. Appearing on ABC Radio Melbourne, the Prime Minister said the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) was now testing a new question after last week it was the reported the gender diversity of Australians would not be collected at the next census. The ABS had previously considered a 2026 census question proposal asking “has your identity or gender changed since the last census?” “We’ve been talking with the Australian Bureau statistics, and they’re going to test for a new question … about sexuality and sexual preference,” Mr Albanese said.
