A Historic Step Forward for Life in South Australia

For the first time in Australian history, a pro-life bill PASSED a house of Parliament! Hon Sarah Game MLC’s Termination of Pregnancy Amendment, to restrict abortions after 25 weeks’ gestation, passed the Legislative Council in South Australia, after some of the biggest pro-life mobilisation efforts in the last two years, starting with Hon Ben Hood MLC’s first bill in 2024. This outcome is the result of significant negotiations, campaigning, and prayer.  Prior to the vote in the Legislative Council, the Premier Peter Malinauskas MP announced that if the bill passed the Upper House it would go to an immediate vote in the lower house – even if it meant they had to sit all night. Instead of normal process, where MPs would have the opportunity over a few weeks or months to consult their constituency – Labor guillotined the Bill to go through the House of Assembly immediately, rearranging the order of government business to allow it to be so.

While the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) spoke all day with MPs about the Bill answering any last-minute questions they may have had, unfortunately, the Bill only gained support of 9 MPs in the lower house. This was a disappointing result, and the ACL is concerned about the Government’s rationale that there are “more important things to focus on”. Despite this result, ACL are more determined than ever to keep campaigning and highlighting the humanity of the unborn. The result in the Legislative Council is an encouragement to keep going – and over the next few weeks ACL will be strategising on how to move forward.
