WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam has pledged that, if elected, the Liberal Party would ban the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormone treatments and surgical intervention for children under 16. The commitment from Libby Mettam comes in the wake of the Cass review in the UK which found there was no good evidence to support the global clinical practice of prescribing hormones to under-18s to halt puberty or ‘transition’ to the opposite sex. “When experts are saying that the permanent side-effects can be liver disease, heart disease, obesity, infertility and other conditions, we must act,” Libby Mettam said. “We owe it to the next generation of Western Australia to utilise and listen to the best evidence,” Mettam added.
