A disturbing bill has been introduced in the NSW Parliament by Greens MLC Amanda Cohn, seeking to radically expand access to abortion. The first words of Ms Cohn’s speech to introduce the bill—“Abortion is health care”—demonstrate the misuse of language by the Greens in an attempt to sanitise and celebrate the expansion of abortion, which is, in reality, the medical process of ending a baby’s life. This legislation poses serious threats to conscientious objection, compromises women’s safety, and directly contradicts NSW Health’s recent review of abortion laws last September. The Australian Christian Lobby has launched a campaign urging the Christian community to stand strong for life by emailing their local MP, the Health Minister and Shadow Health Minister to oppose this dangerous bill.
Specific concerns with the bill are:-
- The bill gives the NSW Health Minister the power to direct public hospitals—including Christian hospitals—to participate in abortion procedures, pressuring faith-based institutions and healthcare workers to violate their deeply held beliefs.
- Medical professionals who conscientiously object would be required to refer women directly to abortion providers rather than the NSW Health information line, as is currently required. This places an unjust administrative and ethical burden on pro-life doctors, nurses, and midwives—especially in small regional clinics.
- The bill allows nurses and midwives—who are not typically trained or authorised to prescribe such medications—to administer the abortion drug MS-2 Step (Mifepristone), which induces abortion before 22 weeks.
- This is an ideologically driven push for greater abortion access, failing to acknowledge the significant risks to a mother’s safety, including medical complications and psychological distress.
- NSW Health’s recent review of the Abortion Act explicitly recommended no legislative amendments to conscientious objection provisions.
- If Labor supports this bill, they would be ignoring their own government’s findings—a clear indication of an ideological rather than evidence-based approach.
The Bible calls us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8-9). God loves life, and He grieves every baby lost to abortion. As His people, we must share His heart of grief and anguish and stand firm as men and women of God against this injustice.
