Jesus Club Equips Local Churches for Disability Ministry

Jesus Club Community is excited to announce the appointment of Rev. Joel Moroney as the organisation’s first-ever Club Mentor, a newly created pastoral role to support the growing number of Jesus Clubs across Australia. With nearly 30 Clubs operating nationwide, including in Sydney, Tasmania, regional NSW, and soon Perth, WA, the Jesus Club movement continues to expand as more local churches respond to the call to share the Gospel with adults with intellectual disabilities. “Joel’s appointment comes at a crucial time,” says Josh Reid, National Director of Jesus Club Community. “We’ve prayed for this role for years. Now, with more churches running Jesus Clubs and asking for support, this is a significant and timely step forward.” Thanks to a generous one-time gift from a faithful supporter, Joel has been appointed in a part-time capacity (3 days per week), with the hope of transitioning the role to full-time as further funding becomes available.

Rev. Joel Moroney is an ordained Deacon in the Sydney Anglican Diocese, with over 20 years of ministry experience in youth, family, and intergenerational ministry. He has served in a range of leadership roles, most recently as Associate Minister for Families at Willoughby Park Anglican Church. He is also a senior Safe Ministry trainer and gifted Bible teacher. Though Joel’s background is Anglican, he describes himself as “denominationally agnostic” and is passionate about partnering with what God is doing across all Christian churches. His appointment reflects Jesus Club’s commitment to working across denominations to equip local churches for inclusive Gospel ministry.

“I’m excited to help churches build sustainable, gospel-centred ministries that make Jesus accessible to adults with intellectual disabilities,” says Joel. “I love that Jesus Club creates spaces where people who are often excluded in society can be fully included in God’s family.”
